The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl LII Champions
The wait for the Philadelphia Eagles and their fans is finally over. They are Super Bowl LII champions, defeating the New England Patriots 41-33 and will parade their first Lombardi Trophy down Broad Street on Thursday. It is their first NFL championship since 1960.
In a game that set a myriad of league records, including the most total yards in any regular or post-season NFL game in history, an Eagles team that made overcoming long odds a pillar of their identity all season long defeated Tom Brady and Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots dynasty to etch their place in history. Former starter turned trade bait turned back up turned starter again Nick Foles won Super Bowl LII MVP, throwing for three touchdowns and 373 yards and adding a touchdown reception on a play that will go down in history as one of the best and most unique plays ever called.
Brady threw for 505 yards, another NFL record, and Rob Gronkowski caught nine passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Danny Amendola and Chris Hogan each also tallied over 100 yards receiving as the Patriots executed a perfect scheme against a Philadelphia defense that could not replicate their usual success against Brady for much of the game.
That is until Brady got the ball back, down five, with just under 2:30 left in the game. It appeared to any viewer to be another chapter of Brady magic, ready to mount one of his classic comebacks. On 2nd and 2 at his own 33 yard line, Brady dropped back and loaded up for a pass seemingly intended for Gronkowski. Brandon Graham, pushing his blocker back into the pocket, just barely got his hand on the ball, forcing it out of Brady’s hand and into the waiting arms of rookie defensive end Derek Barnett.
A long field goal from Jake Elliott made the score 41-33. After an unsuccessful lateral attempt on the ensuing kickoff, the Patriots faced a 1st and 10 from their own 9 with no timeouts and 0:58 on the clock. Brady still managed to get the ball as far as midfield. But on their last play, a Hail Mary again intended for Gronkowski bounced around and then harmlessly to the ground in the end zone as the clock ticked to 0:00, giving the Eagles the victory and their first long-awaited Super Bowl.
For a team who lost starting QB Carson Wentz, probable Hall of Fame left tackle Jason Peters, star utility back Darren Sproles, and middle linebacker and defensive signal caller Jordan Hicks all to season-ending injuries, it was truly a spectacular ending to an improbable and magical season.
